Media Release: Poor coal performance and reliability a systemic risk: ESOO

Nexa Advisory welcomes AEMO’s 2025 Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO), showing an improved reliability outlook on 2024 due to government-backed projects, actionable transmission and consumer energy resources (CER) being delivered on time.

The message from the ESOO is clear: coal reliability remains a systemic risk, with higher unplanned outage rates as they approach the end of their lives. The market needs certainty around these closures to shore up investor sentiment.

Queensland now faces a reliability gap in 2025-26, attributed to higher coal unplanned outage rates, higher demand and delayed renewable development commissioning like the Kidston pumped hydro energy storage.

Rather than undermining confidence in the state’s clean energy transition, the Queensland government should be supporting and delivering the replacement renewable generation and storage capacity of over 18.5GW of approved projects already in the pipeline.

Critically, AEMO notes that Consumer Energy (CER) is pivotal for reliability and cost. If the Federal and State governments can get the CER settings right, with the best market incentives – this would mean cheaper energy bills for all consumers.
