The Victorian Transmission Plan released demonstrates a genuine consultation with Industry and community stakeholders. The final plan:
- Unlocks up to ~10–11 GW more potential onshore capacity than the draft version- by 2040: ~3.5 GW to 14.2 GW of new onshore wind & solar across REZs (excluding committed projects).
- Assumes Yallourn closes in 2028, consistent with current public commitments, but models risks if closure is earlier.
- Reliability modelling shows that without accelerated WRL and VNI West delivery, Yallourn’s closure could lead to tight supply margins in Victoria.
- Bringing forward certain transmission upgrades is aimed directly at mitigating post- Yallourn risks, ensuring renewable and interconnector capacity can offset lost generation.
Nexa Advisory CEO, Stephanie Bashir said:
“The final plan has addressed concerns from industry and communities and there is no doubt that this has been a genuine consultation. The most significant outcome is locking in the transmission backbone we need as ageing coal plants retire and increased renewables come online. It prioritises early delivery of the Western Renewables Link (WRL) by 2028, in time for
Yallourn’s closure and keeps VNI West on track for the early 2030s. This infrastructure is what’s needed to keep the lights on.”
